Cheers! from the Duke of Bourbon We (and some lucky members of The Wine Association) were privileged to taste the not-yet-released Joseph Phelps 2002 Insignia at a recent event. One could almost hear a roar of approval sweep through the crowd. An overheard comment: "I thought the '01 Insignia was the best I had ever had. Now I have to rethink that position." Robert Parker also had a chance to taste a barrel sample of this Napa Valley classic and awarded it 92-95 points. Here's what he had to say: "The full-bodied, massively-endowed 2002 Insignia (78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot, and 1% Malbec) boasts great ripeness and richness as well as that seamlessness that is always a sign of a high quality vintage. While it does not reveal the complexity of the 2001, it equals that wine's mass, concentration, and overall balance. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2021. "The bulk of the fruit for the Insignia cuvee comes from vineyards on Manley Lane as well as the Stag's Leap area. All the Petit Verdot and Malbec utilized is from the vineyard adjacent to the winery. The Insignia cuvee has been one of Napa's great Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines since its inception in 1974. In the eighties, this offering seemed to fall off a bit, but it was phenomenal in the seventies, and most of those vintages are still alive. Moreover, it has been absolutely brilliant since 1991."
