Cheers! from the Duke of Bourbon
The Duke has discovered two big-time winners from Spain - and while taping the Tom Leykis Show no less! We had expected great things from these wonderful wines, since Parker had rated the previous vintages of the Aquilon highly - 98 points for the '00 vintage and 96 for the '01. Note: He has not yet rated the 2002. Both of these wines really delivered, exceeding even our lofty expectations. Read on for more! These wines are the result of a joint venture of Jorge Odonez, well-known importer of Spanish wines, and Chris Ringland. Ringland is a superstar Australian winemaker (Three Rivers and Randall's Hill Vineyards) whose underlying philosophy of winemaking is to start with the best grapes and make a minimalist transformation into wine. Revered down under, his fame is rapidly spreading to Europe and the US. Both of our featured wines are 100% Garnacha (Grenache, more familiarly) from vineyards in Campo de Borja. The hot summer days and cool nights are ideal for growing wine grapes. The vineyards receive aggressive canopy management and thinning to assure the best possible fruit for picking. The grapes are harvested into small boxes to prevent crushing and are hand-sorted before undergoing fermentation. The wines are aged in both French and American oak and are bottled unfiltered. Truly the best grapes handled with minimal intervention. Read what Stephen Tanzer has to say about these delicious examples of the best of Spanish winemaking. Alto Moncayo 2002, Aquilon This is simply a stunning wine and one of the best we have ever tasted from Spain. Tanzer thought so, too. He awarded it 94 points and raved, "Saturated medium ruby. Roasted blackberry, grilled nuts, minerals and smoky oak on the explosive nose. Thick, dense and creamy, with supersweet, liqueur-like flavors of dark berries and maraschino cherry lifted by a mineral component. Lush and mouthfilling but also sappy and vibrant. Finishes with extremely fine, powdery tannins and superb, slow-building persistence. This went though its malolactic fermentation in all new French and American barrels . . . ." Although it normally retails for $150.00, we are offering this Spanish gem at $135.00 per bottle. Buy a 4-pack or more and save an additional 5%.Alto Moncayo 2002, Bodegas Alto Moncayo Tanzer rated this one 90 points on his 100-point scale and wrote: "Medium ruby-red. Sappy black cherry and black raspberry aromas complicated by chocolate, minerals and tar. Sweet, lush and seamless, with a pinot-like silkiness of texture. Still a bit shy following the recent bottling but large-scaled and mouthfilling, with sound balancing acidity. Distinctly exotic in its flavors but not yet complex. A wine to follow." We tasted this intense, rich beauty and agree whole-heartedly! Usually retailing at $40.00, we are able to bring it to you at $35.99 per bottle. Buy a 6-pack and save an additional 5%!
