Heidi Barrett, the preeminent winemaker at Screaming Eagle and La Sirena, had long had the vision of creating a Pomerol-style Merlot/Cabernet Franc blend from the best sources of Napa Valley fruit. That dream became a reality with the introduction of the 2002 vintage of Amuse Bouche. This magnificent blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc is truly a wine to rival its famous counterparts from across the Atlantic, the giants of Pomerol, Petrus and Chateau Le Pin, not to mention setting an exceptionally high bar for its California challengers. Time magazine has called Heidi the "wine diva of Napa" and referred to her as "one of the world's top winemakers." She has several so-called "perfect" wines to her credit, having scored 100 points on Parker's 100-point scale. (The '92 and '93 Maya and the '92 and '97 Screaming Eagle immediately come to mind.)The Duke has been pleased to offer both of her previous vintages of the sensational Amuse Bouche to our loyal customers and we are even more thrilled to be able to offer the stunning 2004 vintage to you on future.
The '04 growing season got off to an early start and will be remembered for an extended heat wave in September during prime ripening-time and an overall lighter crop. The crack harvesting team at Amuse Bouche was fortunate to pick the fruit at the onset of the untimely heat, avoiding an over-ripe character that plagued many vineyards where the fruit had a longer hang time. The lush palate is multi-faceted, showing ripe, balanced, concentrated fruit with seamless and supple flavors of espresso, licorice, caramel, plums and blueberries. The finish is long and tantalizing. Simply put, WOW!!
Purchasers of a 6-pack will receive a limited-edition lithograph (30"x40") of the superb 2004 original artwork by talented American artist Ira Yaeger. Reflecting his fondness for a simpler way of life and the European sensibility of the 18th century, Ira has created a peasant marketplace wine vendor who celebrates joy and enthusiasm in his labor, as well as the anticipation of the harvest. The Ergo Bibamus inscription, meaning "Therefore Drink," reminds us to thoroughly enjoy life and the marvelous senses of taste, sight and smell. Each stunning lithograph was hand-pulled on Rives paper, printed in Paris, France, signed and numbered by Ira Yaeger and is valued in excess of $1,000.00.
