Cheers! from the Duke of Bourbon

We have been beating the drum for the 2005 vintage in general, and Burgundy in particular, for some time now. It has been touted as classic in most corners and certainly is living up to the hype. As Pa used to say, "It ain't braggin' if you can back it up!"

The Duke has been fortunate to be able to obtain an additional supply of the magnificent 2005 Burgundies from Domaine Joseph Faiveley listed below. If you have missed out on previous Burgundy offerings, here is another chance to score.

We'll try to keep things simple - the name of the wine, the Burghound (Allen Meadows, ratings guru for Burgundy wines) score, tasting notes and then the Duke's price.

Domaine Joseph Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin, Les Marcais
Burghound rated this wine 88-90 points and posted the following tasting notes: "A deft touch of wood sets off an elegant aromatic profile that features a classic Gevrey nose of pungent iron-infused earth, underbrush and game along with primarily cool red fruit that merges into concentrated, precise and balanced flavors, all wrapped in an austere and firm but not aggressive finish. A quality villages and worth a look.

Duke's price - $67.50 per bottle

Domaine Joseph Faiveley Beaune, Clos de l'Ecu - 1er Cru
Burghound rated this wine 88-91 points and posted the following tasting notes: "A gentle touch of wood frames a pretty melange of red, blue and violet aromas that sit atop slightly toasty middle weight flavors and a sweet, intense and concentrated finish. This completely coats the mouth with its generous and fleshy flavors that are easy to like if not particularly elegant plus there is plenty of aging potential. A big Beaune.

Duke's price - $69.99 per bottle

Domaine Joseph Faiveley Chambolle-Musigny
Burghound has not rated this particular wine, but has had terrific comments about the other wines that Faiveley has produced from Chambolle Musigny, rating the others in the range of 91-93 points. Wines from this area are often described in terms of finesse and nuance as opposed to structure and muscle.

Duke's price - $82.50 per bottle

Domaine Joseph Faiveley Nuits-Saint-Georges, Les Porrets Saint-Georges - 1er Cru
Burghound rated this wine 89-92 points and posted the following tasting notes: "A potent and expressive nose of almost exclusive red fruits is coupled with distinct earth and animale notes that can also be found on the very rich and ripe flavors that are also generous and full, all wrapped in a toasty and sappy finish. This really gives the sense of biting into tiny but intensely flavored cherries that last and last in the mouth. This too is a big wine and patience will be required.

Duke's price - $89.99 per bottle

Domaine Joseph Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin, La Combe aux Moines - 1er Cru
Burghound rated this wine 90-93 points and posted the following tasting notes: "Here there is much better integration of the wood with a gorgeous range of red and blue fruit aromas nuanced by game, hints of spice and underbrush that can also be found on the rich, full and generous medium-plus weight flavors that possess an attractive texture on the deep and harmonious finish. This is a really lovely effort that has ample aging potential.

Duke's price - $89.99 per bottle

Domaine Joseph Faiveley Latricieres-Chambertin
Burghound rated this wine 92-95 points and posted the following tasting notes: "A very deftly, indeed almost invisibly oaked nose sets off the elegant earth and iron-infused red berry fruit aromas and mineral-infused, pure, understated and wonderfully vibrant flavors that are built on a base of minerality and possess superb finishing detail on the structured and hugely long finish. This is a wine for the patient and will easily last 25+ years.

Duke 's price - $210.00 per bottle

Domaine Joseph Faiveley Chambertin, Clos de Beze - Grand Cru
Burghound rated this wine 95-97 points and posted the following tasting notes: "As aromatically complex as the Clos des Cortons is, the Clos de Beze goes it one better with a dazzling array of spice, earth, mineral, fruit and subtle floral aromas that change every few seconds but continue onto the elegant, pure, transparent and vibrant flavors that possess superb power and striking depth of material on the unbelievably long finish. This is also quite firmly structured but completely balanced and the flavors are the perfect example of the term power without weight. A monument in the making but a wine for the patient. Burghound labeled this one as a "Don't miss!"

Duke's price - $342.50 per bottle
