Cheers! from the Duke of Bourbon
The Duke's December Find!
The 2003 Quorum is an exceptional Italian wine of rare breeding. When you read the description below, you will see why we are so thrilled to offer it to you.
Quorum - In law, a quorum is the minimum number of members of a deliberative body necessary to conduct the business of that group. Quorum was conceived when a group of good friends gathered in Piemonte, Italy, to dine (over a bottle of Barbera, of course) in the summer of 1997. Representing five of Asti's GREAT Barbera producers - Braida, Chiarlo, Coppo, Prunotto, and Vietti - the friends' usual discussion about wine soon turned to their mutual desire to protect the natural resources in Piemonte and help preserve the local customs and culture of Asti. They decided to create a consortium called HASTAE - the name given to Asti by the Romans -to produce a truly unique Barbera d'Asti and give 100% of the profits back to the community. Through their collective love and appreciation for Asti terroir, the Barbera grape, and a thirst to further their knowledge and education, this truly remarkabale wine came to be.
To give Quorum a star quality, each wine producer donated one hectare from their top-producing single-vineyard estates to the HASTAE project. Then it was decided to only release Quorum in outstanding years when the quality was deemed to be truly exceptional. They agreed to designate a winemaker outside HASTAE every four years. And, as an added twist, the winemaker had to come from a region other than Piemonte and have no previous experience working with the Barbera grape. The consortium believed that the best winemaker was the one hungry to learn.
Famed wine critic Robert Parker reports: "The 2003 Quorum is one of the best wines of the series. It displays a superb, rich nose and layers of super-ripe dark fruit, cocoa, mineral, and toasted oak flavors with excellent persistence on the palate, managing to be opulent, yet well-balanced at the same time. 92/drink now-2013."
We definitely concur with Mr. Parker's assessment. This is an extraordinarily rich wine that we know you, your friends and your family will enjoy now and over the next few years.
