Cheers! from the Duke of Bourbon
Shadow Canyon's 2007 Syrah and 2007 Grenache. The party is over, but let's not sing the blues! Gary Gibson, owner/winemaker of Shadow Canyon winery has stopped making (hopefully temporarily) some of the best wines in the Central Coast region of California.
Gary's vineyards are situated close to the ocean at 1,600' elevation. In the early growing stages, cool fog and ocean air is drawn in from the coast at night and burns off in the morning. This cooling effect provides a longer growing season which lends intensity and character unique to coastal hillside vineyards. Because of its unique microclimate, the York Mountain area was granted its own AVA in 1983.
Gary Gibson is one of the Rhone Rangers stars and the wines from this boutique winery go from strength to strength. Shadow Canyon's wines tend to be very primary and require tremendous amounts of airing to strut their stuff. The winemaking is impeccable, but the wines are so rich and are given so little contact with oxygen that they beg for aeration to let their personalities unfold.
We are fortunate enough to have two of Gary's best wines available for you while the supplies last. Shadow Canyon's 2007 Syrah and 2007 Grenache are prime examples of elegant and excellent winemaking. Robert Parker reported:
Syrah - "Most promising is the brilliant 2007 Syrah Shadow Canyon Vineyard, which exhibits a dense purple color along with sweet creme de cassis, blackberry, bay leaf, forest floor, and spring flower characteristics. Full-bodied with excellent precision and freshness. 90-93 points. "
Grenache - "A potentially sensational cuvee is the unevolved 2007 Grenache Larner Vineyard. This black/purple-tinged wine represents the essence of Grenache. It possesses gorgeously sweet black raspberry and black cherry fruit intermixed with notes of licorice, graphite, and incense. Pure, rich, and full-bodied, it is a stunning example that comes close to equaling the two finest Grenaches of the region, the Sine Qua Non and Alban Vineyard efforts. Drink this beauty over the next decade. 92-94 points. "
All of us at the Duke are in total agreement with Mr. Parker's assessment! These wines are no brainers and Gary Gibson is making this so very easy to get these soon-to-be-rare wines to you.
