The Duke of Bourbon is a family-run retail wine and spirits enterprise established in 1967 in the West San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles, California. We're so excited...now we have two delicious wines under our Chaparral label! In addition to our superb Chardonnay, Jim Clendenen of Au Bon Climat has produced an absolutely outstanding Pinot Noir for us. We recently tasted both new wines:
- Chaparral 1996 Chardonnay, Santa Barbara Reserve - Once again, Jim has created a mouth-filling, fruity Chardonnay with the right touch of French oak. It is buttery and well-rounded due to malolactic fermentation, but has ample acid for excellent balance. Evident is Jim's knack for matching his artistic technique with just the right combination of flavorful Santa Barbara County Chardonnay grapes. The wine is extremely approachable now, but should develop and hold nicely for the next five years. An excellent value! List Price: $17.00; Sale $11.99.
- Chaparral 1996 Pinot Noir, Bien Nacido Reserve - After an absence of Chaparral Pinot Noir for over 15 years, we are thrilled that Jim has found the time and the grapes to produce this beauty! Styling it after his own exceptional ABC Pinot Noirs as well as his remembrance of our Chaparral 1977 Pinot Noir produced by Chalone Vineyard, Jim has created an extremely high-quality, Burgundian-like wine with both richness and finesse. It has deep, complex flavors yet seems light and palate-friendly at the same time. We think you can enjoy it today, but be sure to age some to savor in the new Millenium. In both cases he has four vineyard-designated wines, one Central Coast blend (approximately 25% of each) and a Reserve blend (the best blend he could make with the four wines).

The series consists of 12 bottles of Pinot Noir, each depicting an original portrait of a modern famous artist created by Max Shertz. The artists were selected by Max for their considerable contributions to other artists and to our culture. They include Pablo Ruiz Picasso, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Lee Krasner, Max Shertz, Jackson Pollock, Joan Miro, Georges Braque, Franz Marc, Arshile Gorky, Andre Masson and Hans Hofmann. Only 150 sets of this collection were produced.
The wines for this collection, selected by both Winemaker Keith Nichols and Artist Max Shertz, are Nichols Winery 1995 and 1996 Estate Bottled Central Coast Pinot Noirs, with 6 bottles of each vintage making up the complete Masterpiece Series.
The complete series with all 12 artists depicted on bottles of 1995 and 1996 Pinot Noir are now available.
