Tractor Rally Planned to Protest FDA
A rally is being planned to protest the Clinton Administration's proposal to regulate tobacco. It is scheduled for Saturday, October 26 in Kinston, North Carolina. Farmers, equipment dealers, processors and all supporters are encouraged to drive their tractors to the rally. We ask you to decorate your tractors with FDA signage and American flags. FDA caps will be given to all participants. The purpose of the event is to send President Clinton a message -- we are against FDA regulating tobacco and our freedoms.

Clinton Declares War on Tobacco

Winston-Salem - "The Clinton Administration has declared war on the people of North Carolina and the tobacco industry," stated Senator Jesse Helms during a recent rally. Entitled 'salute to the North Carolina Working Families,' more than 3,000 people attended the rally including Congressman Richard Burr, NASCAR legend; Geoff Bodine, Hassel Brown; President of the Tobacco Growers Association of North Carolina and others.

Hassel Brown encouraged those attending to send Bill Clinton a message on November 6, Vote Dole! On August 23, the Clinton Administration announced a proposal to regulate tobacco. Other anti-tobacco efforts by this President include proposed tax increases, EPA and OSHA regulations. All have been stopped to date except the FDA which is now heading for court.

Helms pledges continued support to North Carolina's working families and all Friends of Tobacco during rally.

From the Chairman's Desk

The Clinton Administration has declared war on farmers and the whole tobacco industry, labeling us as 'Drug Dealers' and smokers as 'Drug Users.' You will recall that during the rallies of 1994 to stop the tobacco tax hike on cigarettes, President Clinton refused to meet with more than 4,000 farmers who traveled to Washington and lobbied Congress against the taxation increase. Leon Panetta told one of North Carolina's congressional leaders working for us, the President did not have time to listen to a bunch of dirt farmers. Excuse us, Mr. President, without the farmers of America, you would not eat tonight. Now, President Clinton is at it again, trying to destroy the oldest industry in America -- tobacco. It has always been the policy of Friends of Tobacco not to engage in political elections and encourage support for one candidate over another. However, President Clinton's position is clear and so must ours be clear. It is time to stand up and be counted.

We have not forgotten the farm families and children that journeyed to Washington, DC, from all parts of America to be shunned by President Clinton. We have not forgotten the faces of the children who held up signs in the pouring rain and sleet worried about their parents losing their family farms. We have not forgotten the old timers who never ventured more than 20 miles from home and how they fought to save their farms. We have not forgotten our allied industries who continue to support us.

President Clinton is a dangerous man, promising America whatever he thinks we want to hear. His anti-farmer, anti-tobacco and anti-freedom views must not be tolerated. A vote for Bill Clinton on November 5 is a vote to put us all out of business. I encourage you to think very hard about this man and what he plans to do to you. Lets not forget 1994 nor repeat it.

Cigar Retailers Enjoy Sweet Success

FOT Supporters at the RTDACincinnati, Ohio -- The Retail Tobacco Dealers Association of America recently held their 64th annual trade show. "more than 600 exhibitors participated, making the show the largest in history," said Bill Fader, executive director of the organization. Companies representing cigars, humidors, pipe manufacturers, pipe tobaccos and accessories all lined the exhibition hall. Due to the enormous popularity of cigars, manufacturers cannot produce enough cigars. As a result, back orders have skyrocketed and remain limited to existing customer accounts. Premium cigars are hand rolled and may take years to reach the market. Retailers are encouraged to try new cigar products now reaching the marketplace. Premium cigar prices range from $2.50 each up to $20.00 or more depending upon name brand, quality and vintage. As the popularity of cigars continues to grow, so does the opening of new cigar shops. Profit margins remain high and customer demand is the driving force behind these new shop openings. Gross sales for a new business range from $350,000 for a 1,000 square-foot business depending on location and customer traffic. According to Tobacconist Magazine, "Premium cigars are projected to increase 43.4 percent in 1995, 30.3 percent in 1996 and 23.5 percent in 1997, or a whopping 97.2 percent in expected sales over the next three-year period." New entrepreneurs should research product availability and consult experts in the field to acquire merchandise and products in stocking new stores.

Food & Drug Administration
to Regulate Tobacco Industry

On August 23, President Clinton announced approval of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) final rule regulating tobacco. The FDA seeks to regulate tobacco products as 'drug delivery devices' but only in way that would, FDA claims, reduce tobacco use among young people. These FDA prohibition efforts would severely impact 50 million adult consumers. Here is a look at the FDA's proposal along with the most recent key changes from the original proposed rule and how it will affect you and your business.

Original Version -- Summary
of Proposed FDA Regulations

Advertising and Promotion:

Labels

Sales

Duties and Responsibilities

Penalties and Sanctions

Based on the criteria for 'restricted devices,' an argument could be constructed that failure to comply with the FDA-imposed restrictions subjects the non-complying product or labeling to the notification, replacement-refund or recall provisions applicable to devices.

Here is an Updated Version and
What President Clinton has Approved:

  1. Vending machine sales are allowed in 'adult only' businesses.
  2. Color and imagery in advertising allowed in 'adult only' businesses.
  3. Mail order sales may continue.
  4. Ban on all brand-name sporting events including NASCAR and sports teams.
  5. Conduct a notification program warning those under age 18 of the 'unreasonable risk of substantial harm' from the tobacco instead of a $150 million annual anti-tobacco campaign funded by the manufacturers.

How Will the FDA Regulation Effect You?

The FDA's proposal supersedes all government agencies that currently regulate tobacco. From farmers to manufacturers, every one will be effected, including the 50 million consumers that use tobacco products. For example, farmers will be subject to FDA's guidelines in growing, producing and marketing their tobacco crops. FDA agents will have authority to inspect tobacco farms, fine growers not in compliance with FDA rules, and even seize their crops. This proposal equally regulates and governs all wholesalers, distributors, retailers and manufacturers. According to two industry studies, it is estimated that $7.9 billion in lost output and 92,000 jobs will be lost as a result of FDA regulations.

Tobacco Supports Sponsor Racing Truck

The Friends of Tobacco (FOT) organization recently announced that two companies have signed up to sponsor the Friends of Tobacco Super-Pro Racing Truck for 1996. They are Fabreeka International and SOS Global Express. "The organization decided in 1996 to sponsor a pro-truck to help generate tobacco awareness.

The FOT racing truck is the first truck in history to promote the economic importance of tobacco and support Freedom of Choice. It has already been viewed by millions of people, covered by numerous magazines and newspapers and generated enormous publicity, said Dean Rouse, Chairman of FOT.

Danny McDonald, a tobacco grower from Lillington, North Carolina, drives the truck. Patrick Norton, chairman of Fabreeka International said, "This is a great opportunity for our company to support our industry and advertise our company all year long." The best part of being a sponsor came when Danny McDonald drove the FOT truck to the winner's circle at the 1st Annual FOT NASCAR Goody's Dash 125.

Stephen O'Connell concurred, saying, "Our company is honored to be a sponsor of the FOT racing truck and help support this fine organization who supports us."

Fabreeka International is an international company. Headquartered in Sloughton, Massachusetts; Fabreeka is a manufacturer and supplier of belting to the tobacco industry.

SOS Global Express is also an international company. Headquartered in New Bern, North Carolina, the company is a freight specialist, shipping goods all over the world.

Georgia Farmer Earns B&W Liberty Award

Donnie Smith, a tobacco grower in Willacoochee, Georgia, has been honored as the recipient of the Brown & Williamson Liberty Award for his exceptional efforts on behalf of the tobacco industry.

Smith has been extremely active for several years in legislative activities and in promoting the positive contributions of tobacco. When the Clinton Administration attempted to increase the federal excise tax on tobacco, he organized a rally to demonstrate the opposition of the local community. A few weeks later, he led a delegation of growers to Washington, DC to voice their opposition at the Friends of Tobacco Rally.
