"JUST DRIVE, SEA SAID" 1992
1910 Tractor Column 25" x 40" x 25"
(One of a Kind Kinetic Sculpture)
A 1910 tractor column that was rescued from a neighbor (located next door to the artist's studio) is transformed into a work of art by renowned artist, Richard Taylor. The impression of this piece is humorous (a tractor column, under the sea that is still driving away). This kinetic sculpture has an added dimension of sound. As the wheel rotates, it hits the shifter column and makes a clanking noise. The motor that controls the rotation speed of the steering column is adjustable. One can adjust the rhythm of the clanking by changing the speed of rotation. Complete with a fisherman's lost lure, sand and crustaceans, "Just Drive, Sea Said" communicates wry humor and a reflection on time and physical change.
Note of interest: The pine wood used to make the base is same material that was used on the actor Corbin Bernsen's (LA Law) home in Benedict Canyon. Richard was working on Mr. Bernsen's home creating hardware, carved pine doors and other architectural elements. Documentation is publicly available as Richard had to place a lien on the actor's property. The National Enquirer contacted Richard to pay for the story about the lien and other issues but Richard declined.
"Boogie Fish"
(Kinetic Sculpture)
For interior use only
Boogie Fish is a large scale kinetic sculpture that is formed of a cut out
pattern of a marlin (10' 8" long x 6' 8" tall x 8" deep). This
sculpture utilizes birds-eye maple veneer for the body and is bound by 3"
wide aluminum. There are over 100 tiny electronic motors under the surface of
the fish that are sound activated. Connected to the motors are chrome washers
attached to chrome rods. When activated by the slightest noise, the motors
respond by turning the rods. The moving rods resemble fish scales in motion.
"Boogie Fish" is a surprising piece to everyone on first viewing. People
are completely surprised when the scales start moving to their voices or the
sound of their footsteps.
There are also two other designs in this series:
"Blow Boogie" is a cut out of a Puffer Fish (48" x 48" x 8")
"Moby Boogie" is a cut out of a whale (144" x 48" x 8")
